Dog-Friendly Carmel-by-the-Sea? What to Really Expect on Your Visit with Your Pup

Recently, I’ve visited Carmel-by-the-Sea with my hubs and pup to celebrate our ten years together, and while I believe it’s important to manage your travel expectations by proper research, I’ve found upon arrival that there were a few things I could have been on the look out for.

You may have heard that Carmel-by-the-Sea in California is well-known for being a haven for dog owners, and for the most part, it lives up to that reputation. Our plans didn’t change much fortunately since it’s more of a relaxation type of vacation, but to truly enjoy your time with your dog, there are a few important things to know ahead of your visit. Whether you’ve heard glowing reviews or are just excited to escape for a weekend with your dog, here are some things to expect to help you get the most out of your stay.

1. The Website May Be Incorrect
Preparation tip: Call-First Rule!
Carmel-by-the-Sea is a small, charming town, but because of its size, there are chances that some business information online isn’t always up to date. To avoid disappointment, it’s worth going old-school and giving places a call to confirm if they’re still dog-friendly or if any new restrictions have been added.

2. Pricey Pet-Friendly Hotel Accommodations
Preparation tip: Splurge or book in Monterey
For accommodations, you’ll find some options like Carmel Mission Inn (which I hope to book the next time I’m in town) or other hotels just outside Carmel-by-the-Sea. I recommend checking out Mariposa Inn & Suites or Red Lion Hotel Monterey for a more budget-friendly option which are both on the edge of town – 8 mins away! Just remember to book a designated pet-friendly room and factor in the extra pet fee on top of your reservation. These hotels offer the convenience of being near Carmel without being in the middle of the higher-priced accommodations downtown.

3. Patio Dining ≠ Dog-Friendly Dining
Preparation tip: Go back to the Call-First Rule!
Not all patios are created equal when it comes to pets. While you might think a restaurant patio automatically means your dog is welcome, some spots restrict dogs to certain areas, and a few don’t allow them at all. This goes back to the call-first rule, since a quick call can prevent the hassle of being turned away and your plans.

4. Not All Stores are Pet-Friendly
Preparation tip: Plan around your pet with local pet stores for treats & goodies
Downtown Carmel is beautiful and has about 3 wonderful local pet stores, perfect for spoiling them with unique treats (they have options for cats too!). Many of the stores offer locally made and healthy goodies that make for great take-home souvenirs for your pup and supporting these small businesses is a great way to get a taste of the local flavor (literally!). You also can expect that the treat prices are a bit on the higher side but I had an amazing time spoiling my pup and seeing if she was down to choose her own treats lol. I felt that missing out on a few stores was not a big of a deal, especially when you can turn browsing a specific store with your travel partner.

5. Possibility of No Dog Menus
Preparation tip: Just don’t forget to ask for a dog menu!
While Carmel-by-the-Sea is known for being dog-friendly, one thing that isn’t as consistent are the dog menus. In nearby Monterey, I had an unforgettable experience where restaurants automatically offered dog menus without me even asking, but I don’t get the same experience in Carmel so I assumed they did not offer dog menus (only one place did!). But it goes back to that old saying, “closed mouths don’t get fed.” As it turns out, I found that a friend of mine also shared that their dog was always given a menu, so it’s worth checking. If you don’t ask, you might miss out! It could make your dining experience even better for both of you.

6. Carmel Beach is not just for off-leash dogs
Preparation tip: Bring a leash in case
Carmel Beach is renowned for its off-leash policy, and it’s truly a dog’s paradise! Although, be mindful that not all dogs are off-leash—some owners prefer to keep their pets leashed, and there’s a mix of both at the beach. The good news is that the vibe remains relaxed, and there’s plenty of space for your pup to run around. If you’re up for it, people do swim in the ocean (it is chilly lol), so feel free to take a dip with your dog if that’s your thing and don’t forget your beach essentials.

Additionally, for those moments when you want to enjoy a non-pet-friendly activity, you can arrange for dog-sitting services in Carmel! I had a blast spoiling my dog, however, and did not find the need to find one, but you might like a day without them so there is that option. Nonetheless, with a little preparation and flexibility, you and your pup can still have an unforgettable experience and enjoy the dog-friendly atmosphere in such a quaint beautiful town. I had fun regardless and can’t wait to share my Carmel itinerary with you all.
